progress report 6/20/11

Here's a look at my progress so far, lines for slow-fire, rapid-fire, and the NMC average. Also the second graph is of the standard deviations for the slow-fire and rapid-fire. Its been good to see that the trends in scores have been going up, and the trend in standard deviations has been going down. This is a good thing, shows that I'm not streaky and it also shows that my practice is working out. I have heard that one should not shoot more than 100 rounds of practice, but I am shooting nearly 400 in a session. But my scores seem to indicate that my concentration doesn't fall off much during the session; I do almost as well at the end as at the beginning.

Some more shooting this weekend, didn't do as good as Saturday, but still shot fairly well and at least fairly consistently.

Good shooting today! Not only good, but my best shooting to date with some excellent match scores.

range report - 6/16/2011

Got out to the range and put a bunch of CCI standard velocity through the izzy. I'm not sure if the point-of-impact changed because I switched ammo from Eley Sport to CCI but I was consistently shooting slightly high-left. According to my trigger rose correction chart, this could indicate that I'm anticipating recoil or not following through. During my range session, I thought that follow-through might be the issue, so I started making sure I was doing that and riding the reset on the trigger. Maybe it was recoil anticipation. The gun would consistently go up and left after the shot. Looks like I have something new to work on.

Anyway, my scores definitely weren't what I would have expected, but that's ok, I got a lot of practice in. Still, I want to bust that 800 barrier on a consistent basis.

range report 6/12/2011

Really proud of my shooting at this session. Shot the entire session with the Izzy, shooting the Ruger just as backup. Did have one or two misfires with the Ruger while doing some speed shooting with it which was a little weird as its been perfectly reliable using Federal Automatch ammo. Loaded Eley Sport up in the Izzy, which is has digested without a hiccup so far; just finished off my first brick of Sport.

Interesting that Mueller claims to have a 2MOA dot on their red dot sight while so does Ultradot, but its clear that the Ultradot Matchdot sight has a MUCH smaller dot on the 2MOA setting. The Matchdot is clearly the superior sight to work with.

Anyway, was VERY PROUD to break the 800 barrier in this session!!! That had been my goal for a while but I really didn't think I would achieve it this soon. If I can shoot 800 in the next match, I will be very happy with my performance.

I have been having trouble with slow-fire, but I decided to shoot it just like rapid-fire and my scores went up! I guess I was over-analyzing the shot process and trying to 'aim' the gun too much as opposed to just trusting my wobble. Anyway, the average SF scores are up above 80 now, which was a big step for me.

Progress Report

I put this chart together with every one of my rapid fire and slow fires scores since I started shooting (not counting the targets in competition). Its pretty interesting; I have definitely shot a lot more rapid fire than I have slow fire, but that's to be expected. Still, I need to do more work on the slow fire section.

Looks like my scores dropped off a little bit in the last session when I was having problems with the zero on the Ruger, but hopefully that issue is past.

range report - 6/8/2011

Put a new trigger, sear, sear spring, hammer bushing, hammer, and extractor all in my MK3 today, all VQ parts including a MK2 hammer bushing that removes the magazine disconnect. The trigger pull is improved, with noticeably less creep and unpredictability that the stock trigger had.

Also got the Ultradot Matchdot red dot sight today and mounted it on the Izzy. The ultradot is definitely a superior dot to the Mueller, which claims to have a 2MOA dot but it looks a lot bigger than the 2MOA dot on the Ultradot. I'm glad to have the sight that everyone uses.

The Mueller Quickshot red dot didn't want to zero today for some reason, kept shooting low after about 50 clicks of up; kind of weird.

Shot the Izzy and Ruger side by side. My goal was to run a set of 3 SF, 3 TF, and 3 RF targets that add up to over 760. Well I'm proud to say my targets listed sequentially below from the Izzy managed a 790! I'm really proud to beat the goal.
